Bandra-Worli Sea Link

Hmmm, my all kudos and hearts to the people who made the Bandra-Worli Sea Link. Yes this seemingly impossible marathon projects is now reality and after the Gateway of India mumbai has got its new landmark structure. The Bandra Worli Sea Link will be an 8-lane, cable-stayed bridge with pre-stressed concrete viaduct approaches, which will link Bandra and the western suburbs of Mumbai with Worli and central Mumbai, and is the first phase of the proposed West Island Freeway system.

And whos coming,, yes like project, like inauguration. UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi and Union agriculture minister Sharad Pawar will throw open the Bandra-Worli Sea Link at a public function to be held on Tuesday at 3.30 pm at the Mhada ground near Rang Sharda.


  • Length of bridge (4.7km): 63 times the Qutub Minar
  • Weight of bridge (6.7L tonnes): 50,000 African elephants
  • 424 cables for main roadway: can support 900 tons each
  • Length of steel wire used (37,680km): Nearly the earth’s circumference
  • Concrete used: 2.3 lakh cubic metres
  • Height of main towers (126m): 43-storey buidling
  • Pile caps: Bridge rests on 135 pile caps, the largest being 55 m in length and 55 m in breadth (half a football field)
  • Peak-hour sweat: 4,000 workers and 150 engineers


Currently, it takes 35 to 38 minutes to go the 7.7-km distance between Mahim flyover and Love Grove Junction, Worli Transport experts estimate that travelling the link plus its approach and exit roads, which also measure about 7.7 km, will take at least 25 minutes. The builders claim that travelling the 4.7-km main link will take just 6 minutes.

    The eagerly awaited Wednesday Bandra-Worli Link is ready to be inaugurated by Congress President Sonia Gandhi. India is the first cable-stayed bridge is open, which would reduce from 40 minutes to 8 minutes.

    The Rs 1.634 crore 8-tracks is ready to open, after nearly five years of delay and dispute, on Tuesday. This link-Wednesday will be a relief for commuters between the western suburbs of Bandra Worli in South Central Mumbai, in just eight minutes.

    The project was designed at a cost of Rs 300 crore to be completed in 2004. The cost has increased by six folds at Rs 1.600 crore due to changes in plans and other delays.

    The speed limit has been said to 80kmph but will be lowered to 50 km / h.

    Smt. Sonia Gandhi, UPA President and member of Parliament, the opening of the Bandra-Worli Sea Link June 30, 2009. This was confirmed today by the Minister for PWD (public company), Dr. (Smt.) Vimaltai world in a press conference jointly organized by the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) and HCC (Hindustan Construction Company). India is the first bridge built over the sea, the Bandra-Worli Sea Link is also the land of the long cable bridge.
